Relic Hunting In Karelia
Second "Virgin" Site Discovery
My first coin find turned out to be a 19th century Russian coin
1855 1 Denezhka
I decided to search this spot until I would find one more coin and then to move to a different spot in the field after taking a small break. The next coin came out right away.
The coin's reverse showed a monogram of the Russian Tsar Alexander III (he ruled from 1881 to 1894).
But the obverse depicted Finnish coin denomination - 1 Penni.
Under the rule of Alexander III, the Grand Duchy of Finland was granted its own currency minted at the St. Petersburg mint in Russia. This coin represented that historical period.
1892 1 Penni of Grand Duchy of Finland
I needed to cool down a little bit and think about the pattern I would search the site with. I was wondering whether I discovered a "virgin" site or just one "hot" spot in the field. I had to investigate other spots to draw my conclusion.
So I visually divided the mowed part of the field in four quadrants. My plan was to search each quadrant in crisscross pattern.
