My Program For Minelab Explorer XS, II and SE (Continued), Reviews

Learn Your Metal Detector's Language and Its Full Potential Through Understanding The Manual, Practicing, and Experimenting

DISCRIMINATION paterns vary greatly. I utilize IRON MASK for all types of metal detecting: I always keep IRON MASK at -16 and in OFF mode, and switch it ON only when I need to check a questionable signal. I usually utilize the Explorer's Discrimination factory settings to create desirable Discrimination paterns. Occasionally, I use LEARN and EDIT option programs in ADVANCED MODE to adjust Discrimination pattern for a particular target.

My basic Discrimination paterns:

For Relic Hunting and Cache Hunting - REJECT:"Nail", ACCEPT everything else

For Coin Shooting - ACCEPT: "Coins", "Jewelry", "Foil", "Pull Tab", "Screwcap"; REJECT: "Fe Coins", "Crowncap", and "Nail"

Please let me know your opinion on my program after you use it. You are welcome to submit some pictures of your finds recovered with my program. I would appreciate any suggestions, tips, and constructiv criticism. If you have a program for Deep Search that you believe is more productive than mine, I would be happy to post it here. Good Luck and Happy Hunting!

Short Reviews On Metal Detectors I Have Used

1) Garrett Grand Master Hunter CX-II was my first machine that allowed me to learn all basics of metal detecting fast. Especially I should mention this machine's ability to produce a descriptive sound pattern for each particular target, i.e. the sound ending of a target's signal would allow me to determine the target's shape. The machine can be used for Cache Hunting as it can be easily transformed into a Deep Seeker type of metal detector by attaching two large rectangular search coils on each end. It is a simple, old-fashioned gage-metered machine. Its cumbersome design was the only flaw I could name back then.

White's Spectrum XLT

2) White's Spectrum XLT was my second detector that I used for 7 years. Sometimes I still miss that machine for its durability, versatility, light weight, awesome pin-pointing ability, and excellent Tone ID. Basically, while operating in Tone-ID, one doesn't have to look at the screen for target information - one can determine the target's metal content and shape by the signal's tone and its sound characteristic respectfully. Spectrum XLT is a perfect machine for those who likes experimenting with different combinations of settings, a wide range of them - that makes this detector a multi-purpose machine! It can produce a variety of remarkable finds while Coin Shooting, Relic Hunting, Cache Hunting, Searching for lewelry at the wet salt beach (Beach Hunting). It's also great for Competition Hunts as the detection depth increases when the speed of search coil's motion is also increased. For metal detecting Coin/Jewelry, see My Program Adjustments for Spectrum XLT.

3) Tesoro Cortes is still my primary metal detector for Relic Hunting. Its "love" for iron targets allows a relic hunter to hear a difference between a small and a large square nails! Also all coins give a nice solid "pop" signal which couldn't be confused with a "coin" signal produced by a rusty iron target. The machine is easy to operate because of its "Turn-On-and-Go" Feature (Manual Ground Balance is also available), and turning knobs allow to change settings fast. Its light weight makes it possible to metal detect for hours without fatigue. It's an optimal machine for Competition Hunts. You can read more about Cortes' features here.

Minelab Explorer SE4) Minelab Explorer XS and II are my primary machines for Coin Shooting and Cache Hunting because of its revolutionary Smartfind 2-Dimentional Discrimination and 28 Simultaneous Operating Frequences (from Super Deep 1.5kHz to Ultra Sensitive 100kHz) of Full Band Spectrum (FBS) system. No need to do complicated programming or frequent Ground Balance readjustments, simply Switch On and Go. Advanced Mode allows a treasure hunter to adjust the detector for any metal detecting situation. Minelab Explorer definitely has the best electronics. I only wish it had a better physical body design (see My Reinforcement of the Explorer's Body). Though, the all-new model, Explorer II, has a better designed body and a larger 1/4" phone jack. It also differs from Explorer XS by the use of a Dual Coordinate Digital Display which allows a metaldetectorist to see a dgital read-out of the target's Conductivity and Ferrous content at the same time. I've used Explorer XS for past four years and recovered many "goodies" even at "hammered" sites. It is truly a superb machine! Please check out My Program for Explorer XS, II and SE.
